Description: Return to 18th and 19th Century Acadia to learn about its history and textiles. Plain weave need not be boring. During the workshop, you will weave numerous types of Acadian textiles such as cordons, catalogne, boutonne, chenilles, rayures and torsion based on reference examples from collections in both Maritime Canada and Louisiana.
Prerequisite: Must know how to make a warp and dress a loom independently. Weaving 1 (formerly Intro to Weaving – Table Loom),
Students should bring: A Loom warped and ready to weave as follow:Length is 3 yards (2.5 meters) of 8/2 LIGHT coloured Cotton. Width is 10 inches (25 cm) threaded to 1, 2, 3, 4 and sleyed at 20 ends per inch (8 ends per cm). Weft: Three 2/8 cotton yarns are needed: one the same as the warp, one pale one and one very dark one. Bring notebook, pencils, scissors, shuttles and bobbins. Table looms are available free of charge from OVWSG rentals and can be picked up at the October meeting NOTE: a deposit cheque payable to OVWSG of $500 is required for loom loan (will not be cashed if loom returned on time in good order). Looms MUST be returned by the November meeting.
Materials fee: $7 for coloured photocopies of Acadian textiles and wefts as required.
