Description:  Learn to make a small, sewn, spiral basket from pine needles.

Using pine needles, artificial sinew and a needle students will learn to make a small basket with a fitted lid.  Techniques include:

  • harvesting, preparing and storing pine needles
  • starting the basket and spacing stitches for even spokes
  • increasing the coil
  • controlling the shape of the basket
  • adding new sinew
  • making the lid
  • adding a flange to the lid
  • finishing
  • decorating with beads, feathers, fascicles, stitch designs and found materials

Prerequisite: none

Students should bring: Hand towel and tea towel, scissors and a thick elastic (like from broccoli).  A thimble if you like one for hand sewing.

Materials fee: $20 for all supplies required for this workshop
