warp on a warping millNB: Registration for members opens Wednesday Aug 21 for non-members Tuesday Sep 3.

Description:  Do you dread the warping process?  Possibly it’s because you haven’t found the right method for you and your equipment.  Warping is actually Elizabeth’s favourite part of weaving, partly because Jan taught her a variety of methods and encouraged her to explore others.  There are lots of ways to wind a warp and get it on the loom, but there is no one “best” way; this workshop is about exploring as many different methods and tools as we can cram into one day, so that you can choose the right ones for your equipment and project.

We will explore:

  • Warping boards and mills (and how to hack something with things from around the house!)
  • Winding more than one thread at a time with your fingers or a warping paddle.
  • Different ways of securing a warp and getting it safely from winding to the loom
  • Putting a warp on Back to Front AND Front to Back
  • Warping both Table and Floor looms
  • Beaming (with and without Scotty’s help!)
  • How to choose which method to use for your project.
  • What to do when disaster strikes (do not sacrifice the Red Shirt!)
  • Helpful tools and gadets, including improvised and repurposed items

In the process we will hopefully get two of the Studio looms dressed for tea towels or similar projects.  Students who are guild members will be able to participate in weaving off these warps.

Note that we won’t be covering sectional warping as neither of us have much experience with it and relatively few people have the set up for it.  If there is particular interest there are guild members we could possibly encourage to teach a separate workshop about it.

Prerequisite: none, all levels from brand new to long experience are welcome

Students should bring:  an open mind and any portable tools they have found helpful for warping or want to know more about.  If you own a table loom and want to practice on it you are welcome to bring that as well.

Materials fee:  To be determined but less than $20. Members who weave off the warps will pay for the materials in their portion of the warp.
